Do You Really Need Another Self Improvement Program?
April 13th, 2007 by Ken D
I’ve spent some time the past couple days reading a few Personal Development Blogs. As I read through them, I noticed most of them are saying the same things.
The only thing that differs is the point of view that it’s being said from. So I sit here and ask, “Do you really need another source of self improvement?”
I have two answers… yes and no.
No, you don’t
If you’ve been around the block a few times you probably already have a book/audio program/seminar that has covered most of the basics of improving yourself.
How many different ways can you learn about setting goals, writing them down, and reading them every day?
How many times do you need to hear that you need the self discipline to follow through on your goals?
How many different books do you need to read in order to overcome your limiting beliefs?
And then there is the power of positive thinking; the power of beliefs; values; purpose, etc..
You know the buzz words, you know the authors, you know the material, so what’s the problem?
I’ll almost guarantee that if you’ve been into self development for even a few months you already have a source for all the knowledge you can possibly need for changing your life. And if you don’t have some of the specifics, you can get it for free; either on the web or in the library.
So my challenge is this - if you have the knowledge, why are you reading this post?
Which brings me to:
Yes, you do
Sometimes we need to hear the same things over and over in order for them to sink into our thick skulls. We need to hear it from a hundred different angles until it actually makes sense to us.
We all need the power of repetition. And sometimes we are in a different place in our lives and awareness that when we hear the same thing for the twentieth time, it finally clicks. I was taught it takes 3 to 5,000 repetitions to make something a habit. It’s no wonder I don’t get it the first time.
There have been times that I’ve gone back through a book that I’ve read a few years ago and have gotten a completely different take on the material on the second or third reading.
I think the final answer to the question is only yours to determine. If you find yourself chasing down another self improvement subject as a diversion from doing the actual work of improvement, then you don’t need another program.
If you find yourself stuck and you need some guidance to move forward then you might need to read or hear something else.
It’s really up to the individual and the circumstances you find yourself in. I’ve found a great deal of my ’searching’ was really just me stalling and procrastinating. If you determine it’s just another ruse, you may be suffering from self help junki-ism or even from a fear of failure.
